War is hell

I haven’t seen “Band of Brothers” since watching it as it was broadcast back in ’01 and for some reason I’ve had a hankering to watch it again. I started it the other day and I forgot how it was structured. The first 3 or 4 episodes are exciting and very “up”. Then it turns into a bit of a downer. I’m in the downer chunk of episodes tonight. Everyone is freezing, getting blown up, getting shot…which all makes sense. It’s a series about war, I get that. It’s just better when our side wasn’t on the receiving end.

I’m a little nervous to go to bed tonight. This morning the cat had a nightmare or I pushed him in my sleep or something because he freaked and shredded my arm pretty good while jumping off the bed. Let me tell you, that is -not- the way you want to get woken up in the morning. Pain, adrenalin, fur and bloodshed. The best part was realizing that I was making sure Pixel was OK before I stopped my bleeding. It’s like being in an abusive relationship sometimes. “I’m sorry baby, I won’t make you hurt me again”.

Vampire stories are all so complicated

I don’t know exactly what the deal is that vampire stories are insanely complicated and frequently super emo but it is a universal truth. I can’t even blame Anne Rice. Bram Stoker started it and he set the tone forever. I’m watching “True Blood” and I actually like the show but it is funny how it just follows this tradtion with gusto. The biggest problem with this show is that after watching a couple episodes I’m speaking southern. It’s insidious how it sneaks into your language.

Ozploitation!

Home tonight and concentrating on nothing but watching TV until I decide to let sleep overtake me as soon as possible. I’m watching this really fun documentary called Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!. It’s all about the movie industry in Australia in the late 60′s through the 80′s. I’m not sure I’ve seen one on here yet I’d call amazing but regardless of the movies themselves, the characters involved in making them are making the documentary well worth watching. The movies were full of sex, blood, gore, car chases follwed by crashes and all around insanely dangerous stunts. To give you an idea of what we’re dealing with here, arguably the -best- movie to come out of this period, the culmination and -height- of the art form, was “Mad Max”. So, the documentary, awesome, the movies they’re talking about…not so much.

Clive!

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie so tonight, it’s “The International”. I was -very- eagerly awaiting this movie’s release in theaters and somehow it completely passed me by. Since “Run Lola Run” I’ve been a big fan of Tom Twyker so when I heard he had been given a big movie I couldn’t wait. Then I completely spaced it. I watched it tonight because I remember wanting to see it and couldn’t remember why. Then the opening credits started and I remembered. (doesn’t it look like there are too many “e”s in that word?) I couldn’t sleep for crap last night so I’m a little delerious right now. I’m going to stop talking.

Will the franchise be embarrased?

I’ve been hearing an awful lot of negative things about “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”. No one talks about how much of a bitch it is to type. We’re relatively early in the movie and already my suspension of disbelief is being stretched to uncomfortable levels. I know it’s Indiana Jones but c’mon. Just because you have CGI doesn’t mean you have to use it to ridiculous levels.

Classic movie-ism

I started this movie simply because I had to start something to test out some sound problems we’re having with the media center but I find that now that it’s started, I can’t stop it. It’s interesting how “Mallrats” actually does stand out amongst Kevin Smith’s movies as the black sheep. I like it but there’s a definite weird feel to it which. I’m just glad the failure of this movie didn’t turn him off the film business forever.

I’m actually feeling pretty good tonight which is nice after feeling not good at all the last couple days. I don’t know if it was allergy-zilla or what but I’m glad it’s past.

Look what I found

Donald came over tonightfor some movie and dinner action and he comes back through the apartment from the bathroom and says “Why do you have Step Brothers in a box in your room?” For a moment I was completely flummoxed and then I remembered that I had borrowed it from Hawkins like 6 months ago. Somehow it got put in with the chainmail supplies and when I put them away it got put away as well. Since chainmail is back out, “Step Brothers” is back in the light of day as well. Halfway through and it seems like good clean fun. The last couple movies I’ve seen have been complex/dark/brooding/confusing or just flat out weird and sometimes you have to sit back and just watch something that doesn’t take a lot of effort.
