Hugh Laurie is just way too talented
Taking a small break from work because I’m in the middle of this book and it’s really good. I know Hugh Laurie is a great actor and comedic genius, but until I read his wikipedia page I didn’t know he was also a published author. The joy of the Nook is that I get to just click a couple buttons and minutes later have a book so that’s what I did last night. It’s a dangerous habit but what’re you gonna do. I just can’t turn down a good book.
Bloodsucking Vegas, good clean vampire fun
I’m hanging out with JY at Sunrise Coffee and he’s reading this book that I just finished that we both really enjoy. Bloodsucking Vegas: a vampire noir is a vampire novel with a Vegas twist to it. It was a really fun read and since I live here it was especially fun because I recognized all the non-fictional places in the book. I highly recommend it. I just really enjoy the vampire genre if it’s done well. Twilight and most of the Anne Rice books don’t count as done right, just in case you were wondering.
The essentials
Book, passport, camera. Get me on a plane and to a beach and I’m set.
Weekend reading
This book is everything I want in a good book. It was a fun easy read but not total cotton candy trash. It’s the first book in the series but feels like I’ve picked one up in the middle only because the characters feel so developed. Harlan hints at all this backstory which I think (I hope) will be revealed in future novels but he doesn’t muddy up the water with a lot of exposition. A sentence here or there and then he just moves on. I -love- it when an author doesn’t feel like they have to explain every single thing to you. I picked it up this morning and didn’t do anything until I finished reading it a few hours later. I’m going to have to be careful about not even buying these books until I have time to read them. There’s no way I can be productive and have one of these, unread, in the house.
I’m so happy…I can’t tell if that’s sarcasm or not
I’m doing a wine tasting with Ma tonight so we stopped for dinner first a Timbers right down the street from Valley Cheese and Wine to lay some food down before we throw a bunch of wine at ourselves.
As for the picture above, this is a birthday present from my dear sister, Manduh. Someone was raving about these books and offered to lend it to me only to later renege on that promise. It was possibly a brilliant reverse psychology ploy because by denying me access it only made me want to read it more. I refused to spend money on it though so for the last couple years it’s been a stalemate and I’ve had to live in a Twilight-less world. Until now. Manduh was who that book -did- get lent to and has enjoyed my consternation ever since. She finally relented and got it for me but has now tied my hands and said that since she got it for me I’m not allowed to whine to her about how bad it is. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to do that but I guess we’ll see…
Reading and special beer
I got this book a week ago and it was the absolute top of my list for most exciting book to read right now. Since then I got another book and -another- book both of which are even more exciting than this one. Sometimes it’s like I can’t read fast enough to get to everything I want to. It’s a good week for reading. It’s also a good week for beer. Stone brewery has released their 13th anniversary brew and it is tasty. Unfortunately in the process of taking this picture I lost half a bottle to the carpet. Such a waste.
Such an awesome idea
I already read Max Brooks World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and it was -amazing. I absolutely loved it (I think I talked about it at the time) and I recommended to just about everyone. Well, The Zombie Survival Guide is the book that led that led to that one. It’s like any other field guide except this one is training you for protection from something that will probably never happen. It’s still a very entertaining read but I wouldn’t recommend it nearly as strongly as “Word War Z”. If the title of this book makes you smile you’ll probably like it. If you first rolled your eyes, it’s probably not for you.
