Ozploitation!
Home tonight and concentrating on nothing but watching TV until I decide to let sleep overtake me as soon as possible. I’m watching this really fun documentary called Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!. It’s all about the movie industry in Australia in the late 60′s through the 80′s. I’m not sure I’ve seen one on here yet I’d call amazing but regardless of the movies themselves, the characters involved in making them are making the documentary well worth watching. The movies were full of sex, blood, gore, car chases follwed by crashes and all around insanely dangerous stunts. To give you an idea of what we’re dealing with here, arguably the -best- movie to come out of this period, the culmination and -height- of the art form, was “Mad Max”. So, the documentary, awesome, the movies they’re talking about…not so much.
Prepping for a party
Samantha’s having a pot luck thing at her house and I’ve been tasked with bringing ice, soda and vodka. This I can handle. I’m at my local liquor store. It’s not the best store ever but it’s really close and has a more than reasonable selection of just about everything. They also threw in the bag of ice for nothing since I was getting a couple bottles each of booze and soda. I just -know- I’m going to be up way too late tonight. I can feel it. Well, tomorrow there’s always coffee.
Those wacky guys
We’re having dinner at something kind of different for us, PF Changs. In the past I’ve been a little hesitant to come here because they’ve been…flakey, to say the least. Downright incompetent, to say the most. It’s been a while though so it sounded good and we’re giving it another chance. Luckily they’ve been quite good tonight. I forgot how good their mongolian beef was, too. That’s a reason to keep coming back even if their lemon chicken looks a little like it’s been coated in nuclear waste.
Clive!
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie so tonight, it’s “The International”. I was -very- eagerly awaiting this movie’s release in theaters and somehow it completely passed me by. Since “Run Lola Run” I’ve been a big fan of Tom Twyker so when I heard he had been given a big movie I couldn’t wait. Then I completely spaced it. I watched it tonight because I remember wanting to see it and couldn’t remember why. Then the opening credits started and I remembered. (doesn’t it look like there are too many “e”s in that word?) I couldn’t sleep for crap last night so I’m a little delerious right now. I’m going to stop talking.
CineVegas!
Summer is good for one thing in Vegas and that’s the Cinevegas Film Festival. It is both classically Vegas and much better than classically Vegas all at the same time. I don’t know how they manage to pull it off. It’s a film festival that has amazing value for the the cost of admission because it’s a film festival that has great movies and that you can actually go to! You aren’t going to see a whole crapload of famous people (though there’s a few) but you -could- hope to see both a fake Billy Idol and fake Jack Nicholson. Fake Jack was so good that I was completely taken in. Fake Billy was more of an obvious impersonator. I’m at the Cinevegas Headquarters before my next movie. The HQ is a place to lounge, grab a snack and a drink between shows. There’s also wi-fi, ping pong, pool and the aformentioned fake Billy Idol. I wish I could have seen more shows but I didn’t think about it early enough to take some time off work. There’s always next year!
Beer and Blog: once more into the breech
It’s Thursday so you know what that means: Beer and Blog! Libationblog is filming some new recipes tonight and we’re watching the action on the outside balcony at Bar Louie. For some reason I am unaware I woke up this morning feeling like utter death. It’s like I didn’t hardly sleep last night at all. I’m going to keep this to a minimum and crash out as early as I can. Sarah and John are just being silly for this picture. Which is good, otherwise we’d just have more unhappy looking bar people like yesterday.
Happy hour at Ra
Sarah and Nita decided we needed a midweek sushi, sake and shopping break so here we are at Ra Sushi at The Fashion Show. I have to be honest, it’s not the best sushi but their prices aren’t horrible and their happy hour is pretty fantastic. Not to mention the scenery at Fashion Show isn’t bad either. I don’t know why no one is looking particularly happy in this picture. It’s a good day to be outside and there’s shopping and food and drinking. Maybe I just picked the wrong time to hit the button or something.
