Still busted…

08.26.2008

I am officially giving up on this phone. I’m going to miss the weird extraneous stuff more than the phone itself. That was pretty easily replaced. The cork case and the unsynced information are the hard parts to give up. It was really fun to take apart though. It’s amazing how much crap they fit into such a tiny space. A space that’s at least 1/3 battery. I don’t know why but batteries have just not been able to keep up with the technological advances like computers have. Not at the same rate anyway. They’re better now than they used to be but the difference is nowhere near the difference between todays computers and those of just 10 or 15 years ago. It’s not consuming my evening though. I’ve got “Burn Notice” and “Psych” to watch and chainmail to knit.

But now you can take it apart and not worry about putting it back together correctly, actually do you ever worry about that?

He never has, why would he start now.

Putting the battery issue into perspective:

It’s like hard drives… capacities have gotten huge but the speed hasn’t seen the same improvements. I think batteries will need an SSD-type leap (i.e. fuel cells) to really take us into the future.

Yeah, batteries are based on chemistry and chemistry sucks

  6. Matt says:

I liked that movie “* batteries not included”

  7. Manduh says:

Is that the one where the robot gets hit by lightning?

  8. Matt says:

No the one your thinking of has Molly Ringwald in it.

I think the battery used to last about half an hour in those things too not to mention it cost $4,000. Thankfully we’ve moved beyond that sort of thing. That original battery was 1200 mAH and weighed a metric ton. The iPhone has a 1400 mAH battery and is as light as a feather. What I was talking about was that batteries get smaller and capacity stays the same. Other technology gets smaller AND faster which puts batteries in the loser box.
