Happy 4th of July!
We’re hanging out at Ma’s house in BC for some pool fun and BBQ for the day celebrating our countries independence. We are not celebrating by blowing up a small piece of it ourselves this time. We opted to just go down and watch the officially sanctioned city fireworks show. It’s funny but in all the time we lived here we never have gone further than the end of our street to watch the show. I’m hoping it’ll be fun and I’ll be attempting to capture some of it with the camera which is its own geekly adventure. That’s a win-win in my book.
Today it’s foreign movies
I think it’s foreign. It’s directed by Michel Gondry and it’s at least half subtitled but the other half is english so…I’m not sure. It’s “The Science of Sleep” and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I keep swinging back and forth between really liking it and being really annoyed by it. It is ostensibly a love story but most of the time I just want to choke the living crap out of the male half of the story for being such a moron. The rest of the time it’s interesting and sweet and very creative. I can’t say I recommend it, that’s for sure. I do think there are some people who would really dig it though. If you’re that kind of person, and you know who you are, check it out. The rest of you can safely skip it.
Geeking it up
The photo geek crew congregated together tonight to play around with some lighting scenarios and expand our knowledge. Like anything in life it all comes down to practice, practice, practice. The more you experiment the easier the really basic stuff is. The blog we read about all this calls it your “bag of tricks”. Perfect one thing, know it inside and out and you can pull it out at any time you want. Once it’s in the bag, learn another one. Soon you have a bag full of tricks that you can immediately implement without any sort of fumbling around or guessing. Fumbling around and guessing is basically how we are spending 100% of our time at the moment. It’s fun though.
PS: This isn’t actually what it looks like BTW, I hammed this picture up for 606.
Another (hopefuly) good movie
“In Bruges” (It’s in Belgium) is a really great, dark comedy out of the UK. Those guys may not know much about food but they really got this genre of film nailed down to perfection. We have some good American examples too like just about anything the Cohen brothers have done (“Raising Arizona”, “Fargo”) but we seem to do it a lot less as well as appreciate it a lot less. If you looks closely you can also see that I’m screwing around with the camera. I got my tripod today and it’s wonderful. Living without it has been a pretty big pain.
