Pre-thanksgiving

It’s kind of like a practice run. B & Z drove up today from AZ and Ma’s cooking so it’s off to BC to get some homeade grub. 8 is a lot of people around this table but I hear that we’ll have 14 tomorow for the big thanksgiving. I’m not sure how we’re going to do it except by perhaps bending the rules of space and time. Maybe a localized wormhole or tesseract perhaps.

William Smell

That’s not really a fair comment but it sounded somewhat amusing in my head. I’m having dinner with Malex and they haven’t been on together in quite a while. I had to talk them down from a couple gayer ideas for pictures though, and I mean that literaly, not pejoratively. Before this I spent 20 minutes wandering around Williams-Sonoma. That’s always a bad thing. I wish I had a bigger kitchen. Or maybe not. This way I keep my kitchen obsession under control.

He may not be Bond but he’s still the man

This was another of the 3 for $20 I got in Blockbuster. I heard mixed things about it but like both Kinear and Brosnan so I’m going to give it a shot. Even though I really detested the last two Bond movies I don’t blame him for it. He just picked some crappy movies. Hopefuly he does better after that.

Movietime at the GVR

Justin and I went to see “Casino Royale” tonight and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I used to really enjoy the James Bond franchise but the last one really left me kinda flat. I’ve heard this new take is a more “cerebral James Bond” and I didn’t know exactly what that meant but I like the sound of it. Having seen it, it’s the perfect explanation. It’s a really interesting, detailed story bookended by some really amazing kick-ass James Bond style action. I liked Brosnan as Bond (with the exception of the last one) but Daniel Craig is unbelievably good as the next Bond. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, cautiously optimistic, because I’ve been burned before. Don’t let me down Daniel.

So disapointing

I tried. I really did. I’ve heard about this book here and there, generaly in a favorable context. I picked it up and tried it out but after almost 200 pages I’m just giving up. It’s so formulaic and derivitave. I hear that there’s going to be 3 books but there’s no reason to read them because I’m almost positive I know how it’s going to turn out. It’s like “LoTR”, “Dragon Riders of Pern” and every other “Farmer Kid Who is Really a Lost Prince or Savior Who is Going to Fulfill Some Prophecy and Bring the Land Back to Equilibrium from the Evil Overlord that is Threatening All the Good Peoples Very Existance” story I’ve ever read. Some people can do this story and do it really well. Terry Goodkind for example. Then there’s a bunch of people who take this story and just really suck at it. Robert Jordan and Terry Brooks fall into this category. I did some reading about “Eragon” and found that the reason most people are so enamored with the series is that it was written by a teenager. He wrote the first book between the ages of 15-18 and to me, it kinda shows. It’s impressive for someone of that age to knock out something that is publishable at all, let alone something this popular. But just because it’s amazing for it to be as good as it is doesn’t mean it’s good. The only thing I can say for it is that it is getting a lot of kids to read and that is never a bad thing whether it’s Goosebumps or Harry Potter, but I’m not sitting through it anymore.

More House

I finally figured out what it is about this show that keeps me coming back, despite a relatively formulaic premise and lack of complexity to the show. It’s Hugh Laurie. I could watch him all day. He has managed to take a simple idea and flat character and really bring it to life to the point that the most fascinating reason to watch is to see how he treats his friends, subordinates, patients and how they interact with him. He’s amazing. I can’t believe it took me this long to hear about him but I’m definitly going to find his older stuff and see what he does after this. Oh, and this particular episode? It had John Larroquette, and that is generally a good thing, and in this particular case, a very good thing.

606 suplemental: a new era

The Moto V551 has started exhibiting behavioral issues and I have decided that enough is enough: It’s time for a new phone. The people were very helpful and efficient at Cingular, a first in my experiences at this store, and got me upgraded to the pictured model, no muss, no fuss. I had a Samsung some years ago and absolutely hated it but this model and most of their models are rated quite well and I decided to take another look at them. It looks like that model I used to have was a bad apple in a pretty consistent barrel of quality phones. Don’t let me down Samsung. Of course, getting it working with 606diaries took about 2 hours of futzing around but, as you can see, success! Whether or not it takes better pictures remains to be seen. Stay tuned.
